Can Linkedin detect the ContactOut chrome extension

Short answer:

  • No.

Long answer:

  • The ContactOut chrome extension functions by looking at the URL and contents of a Linkedin page you are on. Think of the extension like a QR code scanner, it doesn't change the QR code, but is able to turn the QR image into useful information (such as a website to browse to).

  • The ContactOut chrome extension does not provide automation, which is typically how Linkedin identifies abnormal activity. One common way of identifying abnormal activity is a rapid spike in network requests. A typical user would spend time looking at a profile, sending a message (etc), but automated tools tend to do these actions in batches (like clicking one button will send 100 connection requests)

  • The most common reason a ContactOut user's Linkedin account may be flagged are:
    1. They are using a variety of tools all at the same time to assess which tool will best serve their needs, with more tools, the likelihood of one of these tools doing automation increases

    2. The user might have been a low Linkedin user and now suddenly spending a significant amount of time on Linkedin, the suspicious activity algorithm at Linkedin has not yet adjusted to the user's change in behaviour. Also, Linkedin does have upper limits on how many profiles a user can view, depending on which Linkedin product they are using.

How to troubleshoot:

  1. Go to chrome://extensions on your chrome browser.
  2. Disable all the extensions
  3. Go back to Linkedin and continue browsing
  4. If everything is working smoothly, then enable the ContactOut extension and repeat Step 3
  5. If that is working as well, you can go through the extensions you have installed and repeat Step 4.
